Cloud gaming distribution: a channel for publishers, not a tech demo
GeForce NOW needs players to already own your game. GameLift Streams bills you by the stream-hour. What cloud gaming really changes for a publisher's distribution.
Direct answer — is cloud gaming a real distribution channel for publishers, or just a tech demo? It is a real channel, but most of it distributes access, not sales, and which you get depends on the kind of platform you join. On catalogue services such as NVIDIA GeForce NOW the player must already have bought your game elsewhere — NVIDIA’s FAQ says “you need to own or purchase a game from one of the supported game stores before playing it on GeForce NOW”. On streaming infrastructure such as Amazon GameLift Streams you keep the storefront and the player relationship, and you pay for GPU capacity by the second whether anyone is playing or not. The question is not “how big is cloud gaming” but “which of those two am I buying, and with whose money”.
Told as a consumer story for a decade, cloud gaming still sits in most studios’ R&D folder. As a distribution question it resolves fast: two products wear the same word, they have opposite economics, and only one puts a new buyer in front of you.
What does cloud gaming actually distribute?
Catalogue platforms distribute playability on hardware your build cannot reach. They do not distribute purchases. On GeForce NOW the member connects an existing game-store account, NVIDIA runs the title on a server, and the transaction stays where it was. Valve’s Steamworks documentation for Steam Cloud Gaming tells partners that “Customers will continue to acquire games on Steam the same way they do today” and that “You will still be paid the same way you are paid now for your application sales (both package and in game sales)”. No new commission, no new revenue line — just a player on an old laptop, a Mac, a TV or a phone who stops being unaddressable.
Xbox Wire reported on 26 November 2025 that “Cloud gaming hours from Game Pass subscribers has increased 45% compared to this time last year” — cloud hours played by Game Pass subscribers, year on year, not revenue or player counts — and that “With the addition of India, Xbox Cloud Gaming is now available in 29 countries”. By February 2026 the model had widened past the subscription catalogue: “Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, Premium, and Essential subscribers can now stream from a library of 1000+ games they own.” Both platforms now converge on streaming what you already bought.
Who owns the customer, and who pays for the GPUs?
Catalogue platforms — GeForce NOW, Xbox Cloud Gaming. The platform owns the subscription, the billing relationship and the merchandising surface. You are a catalogue entry: nothing paid per stream-hour, nothing earned per stream-hour. NVIDIA’s FAQ states that “Performance and Ultimate members get 100 hours of monthly playtime” and that “Up to 15 hours of unused playtime can be rolled over to the next month” — an allowance per member per month on NVIDIA’s two premium tiers, which your title competes for against every other game in the library.
Streaming infrastructure — Amazon GameLift Streams. The inversion: AWS states that “Publishers also maintain full control over the player relationship, player experience, branding, and business model”. You keep the storefront, the data and the customer — and the bill, which behaves like cost of goods sold rather than commission. The pricing page says “You are billed for ‘ready to use’ compute resources that the service deploys on your behalf, which is called allocated capacity” and “You are charged for stream capacity per second, regardless of whether that allocated capacity is actively streaming or idle”. AWS lists the gen4n_high stream class at $0.4982 per hour of allocated stream capacity in US West (Oregon) and $0.6571 in Europe (Frankfurt) — list prices for one concurrent stream slot in one region, not per player and not per session.
A commission only exists once you have been paid; an allocated stream hour exists when nobody turns up. That is game-server discipline applied to a channel most studios treat as marketing — the modelling our distribution practice runs before signing.
Telco-operated cloud. NVIDIA states that “GeForce NOW is currently available from NVIDIA in North America, Europe, Japan, India and through GeForce NOW Alliance partners in other parts of the world” — so in Alliance markets the cloud surface is reached through a telco relationship, not a store listing.
What does onboarding actually look like?
For GeForce NOW via Steam it is a contract plus a checkbox, repeated per title. Steamworks tells partners that “The Actual Authority user of your Steamworks account must sign the new Steam Cloud Gaming Addendum”, then that “In Steamworks, you need to approve the games you would like to show up in GeForce NOW” by ticking, in the store page’s “Cloud Play” section, the boxes that “Enable your game to run streamed from the Cloud, hosted by Valve” and name “NVIDIA GeForce NOW”. Then the line that explains why GFN catalogues are so often partial: “Repeat this store page edit for all other applications you wish to approve to be available on GeForce NOW.” Opt-in is per title and per provider, not per account.
Xbox is relationship-gated: Microsoft’s GDK documentation describes “a private test environment in the datacenter that includes one or more games available to be streamed” and tells developers to “contact your Microsoft account representative” to customise metadata or set up a package flight.
Amazon GameLift Streams has no gatekeeper, which is its main strategic feature: “Start streaming your game builds in minutes, with support for games running on Windows, Linux, or Proton, without the need to modify your game code.” The trade is that reach becomes your infrastructure problem. AWS lists twelve Regions for the service — three in North America, four in Europe, plus Mumbai, Tokyo, Seoul, Sydney and São Paulo. Read it as a latency map: no African Region, no Middle Eastern Region, nothing in Southeast Asia, one site for South America. If your growth markets are the ones we sequence in the multi-channel distribution framework, self-hosted streaming does not serve them today.
What has to change in your build and your telemetry?
Microsoft’s GDK is blunt: “While your game can be streamed with no changes, you might decide to make your game Cloud Aware.” Both halves are true.
Saves are the first disqualifier. Steamworks warns that “Each time a user plays a game via Cloud Play they may be playing from a new virtual PC. For this reason it is very important that your game has Steam Cloud enabled or has a separate online save system of its own”, and that without one “players of your game may lose their progress and saves”. A local-save back-catalogue title does not run badly in the cloud; it destroys player progress.
Cold start is second. Microsoft states that “Xbox Game Streaming clears all data in the temporary drive between any sessions” and that “utilizing more than 4 GB of PLS increases time to launch your game on Xbox Game Streaming. For every additional 4 GB usage in PLS, expect a 20 second increase in load times”.
Telemetry and anti-fraud surprise live-ops teams. The same page notes that cloud users “get a new Xbox server each session”, asks studios to “Ensure your game services can handle 100+ distinct Xbox consoles with the same IP address”, warns that ping times for streaming users “will always be lower than users on local consoles” — breaking latency-based cheat heuristics — and records that “Xbox Game Streaming keeps a user session alive for 5-10 minutes after they have unexpectedly disconnected from a session”. Without a cloud dimension in your dashboards, churn and fraud metrics lie in ways that look like product signal.
Totalled: a save-system audit, a cold-start budget, a telemetry dimension, and — only for phone players — a control layout, since Microsoft’s touch documentation states that “Touch input, in either form, isn’t enabled by default”. Not a port, and not free.
Where does cloud fit against your other channels — and where does it not?
Cloud has no acquisition of its own: it does not find you players, it removes a hardware objection for players who already found you.
You already ship a PC or console SKU. Opt in: an addendum and a checkbox convert “can’t run it” into “can play it” on hardware you were never going to reach — the logic behind every un-auctioned install in the case for distribution beyond paid UA.
You want an instant-play demo or a storefront of your own. The strongest case for the infrastructure model: AWS describes GameLift Streams as delivering “game streaming experiences at up to 1080p resolution and 60 frames per second (fps)” where “Players only need a compatible web browser and a stable internet connection with at least 10 Mbps bandwidth for 1080p streaming”. Try-before-buy on your own domain, with no download and no store review, converts — the paid-in-COGS cousin of the instant games distribution layer and of our interactive practice.
You are a mobile-first free-to-play studio. Then mostly no: your build already runs on the device in the player’s hand, so rendering it remotely adds cost and latency for no reach. For play without installation, a web build is cheaper — see which mobile titles should ship web-native now.
A fourth model skips ownership altogether. PHYND’s ad-supported cloud gaming platform needs neither a purchase nor a subscription — the player pays with attention instead — but as of September 2026 it has published no revenue-share terms, so treat it as a reach experiment rather than a proven channel.
One rule sits on top: never let cloud be the only route to a paying player. Google wrote on 29 September 2022 that Stadia “hasn’t gained the traction with users that we expected so we’ve made the difficult decision to begin winding down our Stadia streaming service”, with access running only “through January 18, 2023”, and refunded game purchases. PocketGamer.biz reported on 16 April 2026 that on Amazon Luna “The Bring Your Own Library feature will be shut down, cutting access to external storefronts”, purchased games staying playable only until 10 June — the report names no year for that cutoff, but its own 16 April 2026 dateline makes 2026 the plain reading — and that this time “Amazon will not offer refunds for games bought through Luna”. Two surfaces retired, four years apart, on two months’ notice.
FAQ
Does listing my game on GeForce NOW earn my studio extra revenue?
Not directly. GeForce NOW is not a storefront: NVIDIA’s FAQ says “you need to own or purchase a game from one of the supported game stores before playing it on GeForce NOW”, and Steamworks confirms that “You will still be paid the same way you are paid now for your application sales”. The return is reach and retention: owners playing on hardware your build cannot run. Since opting in costs an addendum and a checkbox, it is usually a good trade for any studio with a PC SKU.
Do I have to modify my game to run on a cloud gaming platform?
To run, no. To run well, yes. Microsoft’s GDK says “your game can be streamed with no changes”, then lists what breaks: sessions start on a fresh machine each time, so a title without an online save system can lose player progress; “Xbox Game Streaming clears all data in the temporary drive between any sessions”; every additional 4 GB of Persistent Local Storage above 4 GB adds about 20 seconds of load time; and touch input “isn’t enabled by default”.
Is cloud gaming worth it for a mobile-first studio?
Usually not for an existing mobile build: the phone already runs your game, so remote rendering adds cost and latency without reach. It gets interesting in three cases — you also ship a PC or console version and can opt it into a catalogue platform for almost nothing; you want a no-download trial or a direct storefront and will carry streaming as a cost of goods sold; or a telecom partner runs the cloud service in one of your markets, making it a carrier deal.
